Log Homes: Construction Types
If you’ve been studying log homes for a while, you probably know that there are four different types of log home:
- Full Scribe: Traditional log home style where the logs are stacked to form the walls.
- Post and Beam: This style uses logs as a structural support, providing the beauty of natural logs on the interior and exterior. Since fewer logs are used, post and beam homes are a cost-effective alternative to full scribe log homes.
- Timber Frame: Similar to post and beam, but with timbers cut into a square profile instead of using the full log profile.
- Hybrids: Hybrids often combine post and beam and timber frame styles, using a diverse range of materials.
Truly One of a Kind:
Because every tree is different, the unique appeal of log homes is that no two log homes are alike. More than a dozen unique tree species are used for log homes throughout the USA, virtually guaranteeing that your log home will be one of a kind.
Here are some of the different log home styles available through Pine Harbor Log Homes.

POST AND BEAM LOG HOME
Post and beam log homes and cabins use full natural logs as a structural support to offer customers the appeal of natural logs on the homes interior and exterior. Compared to a full scribe log home, a post and beam home uses fewer full logs, making them an affordable alternative to traditional full scribe log homes.
A post and beam log home has vertical log posts that support the weight of large horizontal logs on top. The walls are generally framed as in a convention home. Post and beam construction offers flexible design and construction alternatives. Home location, environment, climate and sun exposure will impact the home design, materials and even the position for your home.
Post and beam log homes are energy efficient. Quality construction techniques, including closed cell gaskets and grooved posts and beams, minimizes or eliminates air infiltration.
